Low Level Waste

Operations generating low level radioactive waste rely on the availability of a safe and efficient disposal route. With access to more than five decades of experience, LLW Repository Ltd provides customers across the UK with a range of flexible solutions, which include long-term disposal at the national Low Level Waste Repository in West Cumbria.

There are a number of materials that are suitable for direct disposal as non-treatable low level waste, but most commonly include:

  • Metallic items above treatment levels
  • Soil and rubble above very low level waste levels

Our direct disposal service is managed by an experienced and highly trained team and begins with the supply of an empty ISO container - a licensed IP-2 type transport package. Once loaded with the non-treatable low level waste consignment, the secure container is transported from the customer's site either by road or by rail to the Low Level Waste Repository. Rail transport is preferable as it reduces the volume of traffic through the neighbouring village of Drigg and is an important aspect of our policy to minimise the impact of our operations on the local community. On receipt at the repository, cement-based grout is put into the container to fill any voids and the container is then disposed of in engineered disposal vaults. Risk and title to the waste passes to LLW Repository Ltd upon receipt of the waste consignment at the repository. The pricing structure of this service is based on the cost per container and is inclusive of grouting, disposal and associated costs.

Maximising disposal capacity

The Low Level Waste Repository is an essential national resource and the remaining capacity is a precious commodity. We help customers to minimise the amount of low level waste disposed of at the facility by exploring alternative treatment and disposal options wherever possible. When there is no alternative other than direct disposal at the repository then customers are encouraged to ensure capacity is optimised through packing efficiencies by maximising the loading of each container with waste items.
