EHS&Q Policy Statement
We believe that nothing is more important than the protection of the environment and the health and safety of the workforce, contractors and the public. We are committed to the success of our customers and will achieve this through continuous improvement, operational excellence and delivery of quality products and services.
Safety is a top priority and our excellent performance is testament to strong leadership and a positive safety culture. A highly skilled workforce, together with a comprehensive set of procedures, instructions and processes underpins our safety performance. Our continuous excellent safety performance has received national recognition from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). Low Level Waste Repository has consistently achieved RoSPA Gold Awards since 2005. A highly skilled workforce, together with a comprehensive set of procedures, instructions and processes underpin our safety performance. We operate an effective Learning from Experience (LFE) process, which provides feedback to our workforce on local, national and international incidents that might be relevant to our operations.
To maintain security we work closely with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure we meet regulatory requirements and community expectations. We carry out regular security exercises to demonstrate the adequacy of our arrangements and to ensure the security of the site. In the highly unlikely event of an emergency incident at the repository, we have emergency response arrangements in place. Throughout the year, employees participate in emergency exercises to test our arrangements.
The best practicable methods of avoiding or reducing discharges are used to ensure that any impact on the environment always remains as low as possible. We carry out a comprehensive monitoring programme to assess the environmental impact of discharges. This includes sampling stream water, groundwater and air from locations both on and off our site. Results from the monitoring programme are routinely reported to the Environment Agency.
We take great care to preserve and enhance the natural habitat of all species living on and around the site. The Repository has become a haven for a wide range of habitats and wildlife species. Implementing a Landscaping and Wildlife Management Plan is one of several planning conditions at the Low Level Waste Repository that we embrace with enthusiasm.
Quality in its broadest sense underpins all of our activities at the Low Level Waste Repository. We have well-established, integrated management arrangements that support all aspects of the business. We have successfully gained and maintained quality certification for the past two decades and are currently certified against ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.
