LLW Repository Operations
Managing day-to-day low level waste management activities in an efficient, cost effective manner and maximising the disposal and storage capacity of the site.
Licence and ownership
The LLW Repository is one of 19 UK nuclear legacy sites owned by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). 
Lifetime strategy
The main focus at the LLW Repository is to provide a safe, cost effective and sustained low level waste management service to customers. We intend to do this in an open and environmentally friendly manner with due regard to stakeholders and the local community’s issues and concerns.
Future LLW Operations 2007-2048
New Construction Projects at the Repository are an investment in design, construction and commissioning work that reinforce the business objectives of the Repository to provide long term LLW disposal/storage capacity in support of the NDA clean-up programme.
Environmental performance
The LLWR site is a prime example of an area which has a high level of environmental protection, with the provision of ideal wildlife habitats for protected species. We pay particular attention to the maintenance of landscape and watercourses for the wellbeing of resident plants and animals.

Low Level Waste 2009
LLW Repository Ltd held its annual low level waste forum on Wednesday 22nd April 2009, at the Rheged Centre at Penrith. The event provided an an opportunity to review the developments in low level waste management that have taken place in the past 12 months and also to look further back as we marked the 50th anniversary of waste disposal at the Low Level Waste Repository Site, which commenced back in 1959!

LLW Repository Ltd held its annual low level waste forum on Wednesday 16th April 2008, at the Rheged Centre at Penrith. The event provided an opportunity for our customers and stakeholders to find out about the latest developments at the Low Level Waste Repository and in this sector of the nuclear industry. The agenda for the day and the speaker’s presentations are now available for download in this section of our website.
Operational Strategy
LLW Repository Ltd set out the first strategy for LLW Repository Ltd Operations up until site closure in the Initial Operational Strategy. Implementation of this strategy has commenced in key areas and the strategy has been developed into the Preliminary Operational Strategy. The strategy will be finalised in the Developed Operational Strategy in April 2010.

17th April 2008 Meeting
The first National Low Level Waste Strategy Group meeting was held on Thursday 17th April 2008 at the Rheged Centre near Penrith.  This was an important first step in the development of a National LLW Strategy.  Presentations were provided to the Strategy Group members and participants by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and LLW Repository Ltd to introduce preliminary concepts and topical strategies in establishing an integrated National LLW Programme.
19th - 20th June 2008 Meeting
The second National Low Level Waste Strategy Group meeting was held on 19th / 20th June 2008 at the Hilton at Manchester Airport. This was the next step in the development of a National LLW Strategy. Presentations were provided to the Strategy Group members and participants by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, LLW Repository Ltd and Strategy Group members to further develop the topical strategies and share best practice to support the development of the integrated National LLW Programme. Facilitated discussion workshops took place to seek input from Strategy Group members on the following topics:
14th - 15th August 2008 Meeting
The third National Low Level Waste Strategy Group meeting was held on 14th / 15th August 2008 at the Capenhurst Site in Cheshire and included a tour of the Capenhurst Site.
13th - 14th November Meeting
The fourth National Low Level Waste Strategy Group meeting was held on 13th / 14th November 2008 at the Gables Hotel near Oldbury and included a tour of the Oldbury Site.
26th - 27th February 2009 Meeting
The 5th National Low Level Waste Strategy Group meeting was hosted on 26-27 February 2009 by Scottish Government in Edinburgh.
21st May 2009 Meeting
The 6th National Low Level Waste Strategy Group meeting was held on 21st May 2009 in Warrington and was hosted by URS Washington Division.
8th September 2009 Meeting
 The 7th National Low Level Waste Strategy Group meeting was held on 8th September 2009 at the Sellafield Centre hosted by Sellafield Ltd. 
17th November 2009 Meeting
The 8th National Low Level Waste Strategy Group meeting was held on 17th November 2009 at in Warrington and was hosted by URS Washington Division.

07 Aug 2009: UK Nuclear Industry LLW Strategy
On the 5th June 2009, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority launched a consultation for the draft strategy for the Management of Solid Low Level Radioactive Waste from the UK Nuclear Industry. This is in response to revised Government policy for the management of solid Low Level Waste (LLW).  The strategy has been produced in conjunction with the Low Level Waste Strategy Group.  The strategy is being launched along with the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), which underpins the strategy.
25 Jan 2010: UK Nuclear Industry LLW Strategy
The draft UK Strategy for the Management of Solid Low Level Radioactive Waste was transmitted to Government for review and approval on 22nd January 2010.
01 Aug 2007: PCM Retrieval Complete
The Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR) team are celebrating the return of the final consignment of bulk Plutonium Contaminated Material (PCM) to Sellafield from the repository.
