Site operations

The main focus of the LLWR is to provide a safe, reliable, cost-effective low level waste management service to the UK. We are mindful of an ongoing regulator and stakeholder commitment to decommission and clean-up redundant facilities.

Following the successful retrieval and transportation of bulk PCM to Sellafield, clean-up of the site continues with the retrieval and disposal of the remaining Hex cylinders. The cylinders contain small quantities of uranium residues and were sent to the Repository in the 1950s for storage.

Vault 8 will reach full capacity by the end of 2008. A planning application for construction of Vault 9 for storage was submitted on 29th June 2007 with planning consent granted by the Waste Planning Authority, Cumbria County Council, on 22nd January 2008. Construction of Vault 9 is scheduled to commence Summer 2008 with partial handover of the Vault by the end of that year.

The remaining legacy from the Royal Ordnance Factory (ROF), including the toluene tanks will also be remediated during this phase.

Vault 8 will reach full capacity by the end of 2008. A planning application for construction of Vault 9 for storage was submitted on 29th June 2007. Subject to the necessary authorisations and consents being in place, construction is scheduled to commence early 2008.

Contingency measures to provide temporary storage facilities to bridge the gap between Vault 8 reaching full capacity and Vault 9 becoming available are in process.
