Future LLW Operations 2007-2048

New Construction Projects at the Repository are an investment in design, construction and commissioning work that reinforce the business objectives of the Repository to provide long term LLW disposal/storage capacity in support of the NDA clean-up programme.

Future development of the site is dependent upon the NDA strategy supporting continued disposals at the Repository and is subject to the necessary regulatory authorisations and planning consents being in place.

Consideration of site end state addresses the risks posed by (primarily) historical and future disposals. Appropriate risk reduction measures will have a strong influence on this policy and strategy. New Construction Projects are therefore closely linked to the conclusions of the Lifetime Project and associated post closure safety case.

Continued positive and open stakeholder involvement in new Construction Projects is a key element of the work.

Mitigation activities are included should the provision of new vault storage capacity be delayed due to planning, regulatory or national strategy issues.

Provision of further vault storage capacity is planned on a ‘just in time’ basis with work closely coordinated with vault capping and other Site Closure projects.

Vault 9 Storage

Provision of vault storage capacity that can be progressively built based on LLW arisings. The strategy is to design, construct and commission Vault 9 with subsequent extensions covered by the Vault Provision project.
Vault 9 will give approximately 100,000m3 of LLW storage capacity after which new vault provision will provide ‘just in time’ storage to ensure LLW disposal operations continue until 2050.

Vault Provision

The aim is to provide storage capacity after Vault 9 through to the close of LLW operations in 2050.

Vault & Trench Capping

The project will require additional infrastructure to support the capping installation. It ensures delivery of the maximum practical quantities of infill materials to the site by rail in line with the strategy to minimise road transport.

Grouting Facility

This project will build and commission a new grouting facility to replace the existing ageing facility which has exceeded its design life.
