Health & Safety performance
Safety is a top priority at the Low Level Waste Repository and our excellent safety performance is testament to the safety leadership and positive safety culture prevalent across the site.
During 2006/07, no lost time accidents occurred and by the end of 2006/07, 173 weeks had elapsed since the last ‘over three days away’ case. This impressive safety record has been maintained to date during 2007/2008.
Our safety performance is underpinned by a highly skilled workforce and a comprehensive set of procedures, instructions and process and further enhanced by a positive safety culture. This was recognised when the LLW Repository won a RoSPA Gold award for the second year running in 2007. We hope to further enhance our safety record with a hat trick at the forthcoming awards ceremony in 2008.
Acknowledging that human performance is key to excellent safety performance, we place great importance on giving employees the human performance tools they need to keep themselves and their colleagues safe. This is supported by an effective Learning from Experience (LFE) process which provides feedback to the workforce on local, national and international incidents that may have a bearing or be relevant to our operations.
We constantly strive to improve the quality of our safety arrangements and ensure that they are relevant to the types of hazards faced by employees at the LLW Repository site.
