LLW Repository Ltd

New Customers

We aim to provide our Customers with easy access to our portfolio of waste and packaging services. This section of our website gives a basic overview of the process for consigning low level waste to LLW Repository Ltd for treatment or disposal to support potential New Customers.  Further guidance can be found within the Waste Acceptance Criteria and Waste Acceptance Procedure pages.  For advice on any of LLW Repository Ltd's services or for details of how to become a Customer, please see the Customer Contacts page.

1. Early Engagement

We would advise all New Customers to discuss their waste management needs with LLW Repository Ltd as far in advance of requiring treatment or disposal services as possible.  Early engagement allows any issues to be identified and resolved, where possible.  LLW Repository can also provide advice on characterisation and packaging requirements which will assist in a right first time approach.  We are also happy to support customers in optioneering and assessment processes when considering how best to manage their radioactive waste.

2. Agreement in Principle

The first formal step in accessing LLW Repository Ltd's waste treatment and disposal services is to seek Agreement in Principle to the acceptance of the waste from LLW Repository Ltd.  To do this, the customer must submit a completed Agreement in Principle Form for review.  LLW Repository Ltd will then review the Form and either give Agreement in Principle or reject the request.  If a request is rejected, the Customer will be informed of the reasons why the request has been rejected.

3. Disposal Authorisation

To allow the treatment or disposal of low level waste, the customer must hold a valid disposal authorisation issued under the relevant legislation.  Following Agreement in Principle from LLW Repository Ltd to accept the waste, the Customer should obtain an authorisation from the relevant environmental agency (Environment Agency for England and Wales or Scottish Environmental Protection Agency for Scotland).  The authorisation will state the requirements the Customer must fulfil in order to transfer waste to LLW Repository Ltd for treatment and/  or disposal.  This is likely to specify limits on both the radioactivity concentration of the waste and the total radioactivity that can be transferred to LLW Repository Ltd.

4. Waste Services Contract

New Customers must enter into a Waste Services Contract with LLW Repository Ltd in order to access the waste and packaging services we offer.  The contract incorporates four key elements:

  • Terms and Conditions
  • Waste Acceptance Criteria
  • Waste Acceptance Procedure
  • Service Pricing Mechanisms

To ensure equitable treatment of all Customers, the Waste Services Contract for each customer is prepared from a model contract which has been negotiated with our existing Customers.  LLW Repository Ltd does not negotiate on these terms and conditions with individual Customers.  All Agreements expire on a common date.  The current Waste Services Contract commenced on 1st April 2010 and will expire on 31st March 2015.

5. Packaging Services

Low Level Waste must be transported in approved containers.  The Waste Acceptance Criteria define the standard containers that can be used for the relevant waste service.  These containers can be obtained from LLW Repository Ltd through the Waste Services Contract.  Customers can place an order for the number of containers they require to meet their waste management needs.  There are various different containers available to suit particular transport requirements.
