From our base, at the Low Level Waste Repository in West Cumbria, we offer UK customers a portfolio of waste services. This section of our website gives an overview of the services we provide.
The Metallic Waste Treatment Service, provided by LLW Repository Ltd, opens up exciting opportunities for our customers to recycle material as well as reduce the volumes of low level waste required for disposal at the Low Level Waste Repository, which is better for the environment and a more efficient use of resources.
Having the option to treat metallic waste gives our customers greater flexibility in how to manage low level radioactive waste. This service is helping to reduce the volume of waste requiring disposal at the Low Level Waste Repository by using a range of readily available techniques.
Our efficient and cost-effective service gives customers more options when considering how to manage metallic low level waste arising from industrial operations. The list of materials we accept includes: Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, Aluminium, Brass, Copper and Lead as well as other less common metals.
The objective of the service we offer is to reduce the volume of low level waste for disposal by removing contamination from clean metal so that it can be recycled. We can use a range of techniques such as shot-blasting, size reduction and melting to treat the metallic waste. Secondary waste arising from the process, such as slag from metal melting, can then be disposed of at the Low Level Waste Repository.
LLW Repository Ltd offers a Supercompactable Waste Treatment Service to customers, to support the minimisation of the volume of low level waste to be disposed of at the Low Level Waste Repository. Waste undergoes high force compaction at the Waste Monitoring and Compaction (WAMAC) Facility at Sellafield in West Cumbria.
There are two main options available to customers under the Supercompactable Waste Treatment Service:
Loose Supercompactable Waste Treatment Service
Under this option, LLW Repository Ltd supplies the Customer with a suitable transport container. The customer then puts compactable waste into bags and loads the bags into the transport container. LLW Repository Ltd collects the transport container and transports it to the Supercompactable Waste Treatment Facility at Sellafield for treatment, which can include shredding as well as compaction. The compacted bags, within a waste box, are then loaded into a disposal container and transported to the Low Level Waste Repository for grouting and disposal.
Drummed Supercompactable Waste Treatment Service
Under this option, Customers load compactable waste into drums and transport these to the Supercompactable Waste Treatment Facility at Sellafield for treatment. The compacted drums are then loaded into a disposal container and transported to the Low Level Waste Repository for grouting and disposal.
LLW Repository Ltd offers a disposal service for low level waste. This is our core service offering. Containers of low level waste are transported to the Low Level Waste Repository by rail or road. Each container is filled with a cement based grout to fill any voids and the container is then disposed of in our engineered disposal facility.
LLW Repository Ltd offers a comprehensive free Customer Support Service to new and existing customers to provide advice on lower activity waste management including treatment and disposal service options. Our main focus is on waste characterisation and waste segregation to support customers in accessing our waste treatment and disposal services. We can provide advice on understanding the requirements of LLW Repository Ltd's Waste Acceptance Criteria and guidance on a wide range of waste management, packaging and transportation topics. Our aim is to ensure the process of consigning waste to LLW Repository Ltd for treatment and / or disposal is as simple as possible for our Customers whilst meeting the relevant regulatory requirements.
LLW Repository Ltd is always looking to expand its service offering to customers to facilitate the improved treatment and disposal of waste to make it easier for Customers to manage their lower activity wastes in accordance with the Waste Hierarchy and to preserve capacity at the Low Level Waste Repository.
As detailed above, we currently offer metallic waste treatment, supercompactable waste treatment and low level waste disposal services across our entire customer base. With increasing focus on sustainability and the application of the Waste Hierarchy, with a strong emphasis on waste treatment and minimisation, LLW Repository Ltd is looking to expand its service offering to include additional treatment, transport and customer support services both directly and through the use of the supply chain. We anticipate this to be significantly enhanced by improved strategic co-ordination being brought about by the current changes in the structure of the UK nuclear industry. We are currently developing combustible waste treatment and very low level waste disposal services.
