Strategic BPEO Assesments

To support the development and implementation of new treatment and disposal routes, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and LLW Repository Ltd have developed a series of strategic Best Practicable Environmental Option (BPEO)Assessments.  Each assessment considers the options for treatment and disposal of a specific type of waste in the context of a national approach and inventory.  We have published these documents here on our website to allow our Customers to use these documents as references or as the basis of their own individual BPEO Assessments.  If you need any additional information or support with the use of these BPEO Assessments then please get in touch using our dedicated customer e-mail address: customerteam@llwrsite.com

Metallic Waste

This study was carried out by Studsvik UK Ltd under contract to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.  It identifies quantities and types of metallic low level waste identified in the 2004 UK National Radioactive Waste Inventory (and later updates).  The document sets out the options for management of contaminated metallic waste.  This study is a useful reference for those interested in the recycling and treatment of metallic waste and anyone involved in preparation of similar studies relating to metallic low level waste management.

Combustible Waste

This study was carried out by ABNC Ltd under contract to LLW Repository Ltd.  It quantifies the volumes of combustible LLW identified in the 2007 UK National Radioactive Waste Inventory.  The document sets out the options identified for the management of combustible low level waste.  It is a useful reference for those interested in thermal treatment of low level waste and those involved in preparation of similar studies into the Best Practicable Means of carrying out thermal treatment of low and very low level radioactive wastes.

Very Low Level Waste

This study was carried out by Entec UK Ltd under contract to LLW Repository Ltd.  It identifies and evaluates the options for disposal of the large quantities of Very Low Level Waste, (VLLW) currently identified in the current UK National Radioactive Waste Inventory, defined as High Volume VLLW.  This study involved a wide range of stakeholders and will be of interest to those organisations seeking to determine the Best Practicable Means of disposing of VLLW from their own facilities as well as organisations seeking to create VLLW disposal capability.

The document is presented in two volumes.  Volume 1 is the final report and Volume 2 presents the Scoring Commentary and Appendices.
