Site Stakeholder Group

The West Cumbria Sites Stakeholder Group represents the interests of anyone and everyone who cares about what goes on at the LLW Repository.

It is made up of representatives from the local authorities, unions, regulatory bodies like the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII), and the Environment Agency (EA), the Planning Authority, the police, health authority and elected representatives. Attendance by members of the general public is actively encouraged.

The main function of the committee is acting as a ‘watchdog’. Close contact is maintained with the site’s management team in order to monitor activities and reduce potential impacts on the local community from day-to-day operations.

The overarching purpose of the West Cumbria Sites Stakeholder Group is to:

  • Inform the public of activities on the site and of the site operator.
  • Act as a conduit for two-way information provision.
  • Act as a ‘clearing house’ for community concerns by providing independent interpretation of information in ways that carry the confidence and trust of the community.

A special sub committee has been set up to concentrate on the activities of the Low Level Waste Repository and represent the views of the immediate local community.

Meetings are quarterly and held on the second Wednesday in the months of March, June, September and December. They are held in the Drigg Village Hall to allow full access to members of the general public.
