Site introduction
The Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR) is the UK’s national low level waste (LLW) disposal facility and located on the West Cumbrian coast approximately 7km south east of Sellafield. It has operated safely as the principal national disposal facility for low-level radioactive wastes since 1959.
The waste is disposed of in engineered concrete vaults and where possible the waste is compacted, containerised and grouted before placement in the vault.
The majority of waste disposed is transported by rail from Sellafield. All other waste arrives by road from other UK nuclear facilities, hospitals, research establishments and other industries. The waste typically comprises paper, packing materials, plastic sheeting, protective clothing and redundant equipment. Other types of LLW include bulky and heavy items resulting from the decommissioning of nuclear facilities and old industrial sites. More than £100 million has been invested in the infrastructure of the site since 1999 to preserve the facility as a long-term UK national repository although it is recognised that this is subject to the relevant regulatory permissions being in place.
LLW Repository Limited is the current tier 1 management and operations contractor on the Low Level Waste Repository Site and manages the day-to-day activities on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).
