Lifetime strategy
The main focus at the LLW Repository is to provide a safe, cost effective and sustained low level waste management service to customers. We intend to do this in an open and environmentally friendly manner with due regard to stakeholders and the local community’s issues and concerns.
Work on the site is currently being delivered in four phases leading to Site Closure in 2059.
The emptied and redundant facilities used to store and retrieve PCM are being cleaned out with demolition by 2010.
Subject to obtaining the relevant authorisations and consents, we will continue to receive, treat and dispose/store the UK’s low level waste until 2050.
A significant construction programme is planned to provide future capacity on the site in the form of Vault 9 and plans are afoot for a rolling programme of modular vaults to allow us to receive LLW upto 2050.
The completion of the cap over the vaults and trenches and remediation of the site infrastructure will be the final activities signifying site closure in 2059
