LLW Repository Ltd

metallic

Our Metallic Waste Treatment Service means that metallic low level waste can be treated by a range of techniques including shot-blasting, size reduction and melting. The aim of this service is to reduce the volume of low level waste by separating contamination from clean metal that can be recycled. The secondary waste from the treatment process, such as slag from metal melting, can then be disposed of at the Low Level Waste Repository.

We can reduce the volume of low level waste to be disposed of by up to 95%

combustible

Our Combustible Waste Treatment Service allows a wide variety of materials to be thermally treated, with the waste volumes being reduced by up to 95% and delivers real cost savings when compared to direct disposal of low level waste. The list of materials we accept for thermal treatment is extensive, but most commonly includes: paper and cardboard, packaging materials, plastic sheeting and protective clothing.

Having the option to treat combustible waste gives Customers greater flexibility to manage their low level waste

  • Combustible Waste Image 2

We offer access to a range or treatment facilities across the world to reduce the final volume of waste that needs to be disposed of

supercompactable

Our Supercompactable Waste Treatment Service uses high force compaction to reduce the final volume of low level waste prior to disposal at the Low Level Waste Repository. This service is just one of a range of flexible and cost-effective low level waste management services we offer. It is an essential component in reducing final waste volumes and is suitable for a wide range of wastes that cannot be treated by other means.

  • Supercompactable Waste Image 1

We can handle most wastes that will reduce in volume at least 30% when compacted. We can reduce waste volumes by around 80%

  • Supercompactable Waste Image 2

Waste is crushed at a compaction plant and the product is then consigned to the Low Level Waste Repository for disposal

very low level

We are developing a Very Low Level Waste Disposal Service to support Customers who produce waste fitting the definition of very low level waste. Government policy on managing very low level waste allows a more flexible approach and introduces the option to dispose of this type of waste in appropriate landfill sites rather than using precious capacity at the Low Level Waste Repository.

  • vVery Low Level Waste Image 1

Very low level waste is typically metals, rubble and soil from the decommissioning of buildings on nuclear sites

  • Very Low Level Waste Image 2

Our service will align with Government policy to use specified landfills for disposal of very low level waste

low level

Our Low Level Waste Disposal Service for low level waste that cannot be treated, or residual wastes from a treatment process, remains the core service offered at the Low Level Waste Repository. Waste is received at the site by rail or road in containers. Each container is filled with a cement based grout to remove any voids and the container is then disposed of in our engineered vault.

Our disposal operations at the Low Level Waste Repository are authorised by the Environment Agency
